Veterans League
Honouring the sacrifice of SPLM-IO veterans and ensuring their welfare, dignity, and continued contribution to South Sudan's peace and nation-building.
The SPLM-IO Veterans League represents the men and women who bore arms and sacrificed in the struggle for a just and peaceful South Sudan. It advocates for veterans' welfare, preserves the Movement's liberation heritage, and channels the experience of former combatants into constructive roles in the peace process and national reconstruction.
Our Mission
To honour the service and sacrifice of SPLM-IO veterans; to advocate for their welfare, rehabilitation, and reintegration; to preserve the historical memory of the liberation struggle; and to ensure that veterans remain respected, productive members of South Sudanese society and active contributors to the peace process.

Welfare & Rehabilitation
Advocating for pensions, healthcare, and social support for veterans and the families of fallen combatants, and monitoring implementation of DDR commitments under the R-ARCSS.
Reintegration & Livelihoods
Supporting veterans' transition to civilian life through vocational training, land access, and economic opportunities that leverage their discipline and leadership skills.
Historical Preservation
Documenting the history of the SPLM-IO's armed struggle, preserving oral testimonies, and ensuring the sacrifices of veterans are recorded for future generations.
Peace & Security Sector Reform
Contributing veterans' expertise to the design of a unified national army and security sector reform processes, drawing on first-hand experience of conflict and command.
Political Engagement
Ensuring veterans have a voice in the SPLM-IO's political structures and that their perspectives on peace implementation, accountability, and governance are heard.
Fallen Heroes Commemoration
Organising annual commemorations for fallen SPLM-IO combatants, supporting bereaved families, and advocating for official recognition of the Movement's war dead.
Recent Activities
Veterans Welfare Advocacy Meeting with CTSAMVM
A delegation of Veterans League representatives met with the Ceasefire Transitional Security Arrangements Monitoring and Verification Mechanism to present documented cases of unpaid pensions and unmet DDR commitments affecting SPLM-IO veterans.
Liberation Day Commemoration — Upper Nile State
The Veterans League organised a solemn commemoration in Malakal marking the anniversary of the SPLM-IO's founding struggle, honouring fallen combatants and reaffirming the Movement's commitment to the values for which they fought.
Vocational Skills Workshop for Demobilised Combatants
In partnership with an international NGO, the Veterans League facilitated a two-week vocational training programme for 45 demobilised SPLM-IO combatants, covering construction, agriculture, and small business management.
